The winner will be announced at the MOA's House of Delegates Do you know an outstanding resident to nominate for the 2025 Resident of the Year Award? We need to hear from you! The MOA is looking to recognize and honor an outstanding osteopathic resident from Michigan who goes above and beyond to bring a sense of pride to the profession by exhibiting the exemplary characteristics of an osteopathic physician. All osteopathic physicians, currently in their third through last year of residency, are eligible to be nominated by their program director! One recipient will be announced during the MOA's House of Delegates, which is scheduled to be held virtually, Saturday, April 26, 2025. A $1,000 award will be mailed to the recipient. Dr. Gorz is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She currently is a Chief Resident at Corewell Health-Beaumont Royal Oak Hospital for emergency medicine. Dr. Gorz served as Resident Trustee for the MOA Board of Trustees and the Chair of the MOA Council of Intern and Residents (MOACIR) for the past two years. In addition, she previously served as the Student Representative, Event Coordinator and Vice Chair for the MOACIR. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, as 3rd year medical student, she became the co-founder of PPE for MI, a PPE drive based on collecting donations from local businesses for frontline workers in Metro Detroit. Due to this initiative, she was invited to speak nationally at the AOA DO Day in 2022 regarding the importance of advocacy and ways to get involved locally and nationally. Rebecca accepted her nomination with the following statement, "I am so honored and humbled to have been chosen for this award. My successes over the past few years would not have been possible without the MOA's support." 2023: EMMANUEL DIMITRI TITO, DO Congratulations to Dr. Tito! And well-deserved as he has a long list of leadership roles. As one of the nominators said, “He not only succeeds academically but also proves to be a strong and compassionate leader who unswervingly thinks deeply about helping underserved communities. Dr. Tito received a plaque and a $1,000 award from the Michigan Osteopathic Association’s Honors and Awards Committee. 2022: ZEINAB BAZZI, DODr. Bazzi earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 2015 and obtained her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2019. Currently she is completing her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital (HFWH). Dr. Bazzi’s superiors and colleagues as well as the Resident of the Year Award selection committee were impressed with her emphasis on teamwork, professionalism, and great passion for medicine. She founded and chaired the first ever Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) committee at HFWH which served as the official advisory body to the HFWH administration on matters of diversity and inclusion in clinical care. 2021: NICOLE JAMIESON, DO Dr. Jamieson earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 2008 majoring in kinesiology and dance. She then went on to complete medical school at Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2016. She is currently completing her residency in general surgery at Garden City Hospital. Dr. Jamieson's peers and patients applaud her for her ability to keep cool under pressure, positive attitude, and drive to do what is best for the patient. It was noted that Dr. Jamieson was the only surgical resident at her hospital in from June 2020-June 2021 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She fulfilled the duties of what should have been multiple residents and never complained. 2020: JOSEPH BRODERICK, DODr. Broderick earned his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University in 2012 and obtained his medical degree from MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2017. Currently he is completing his residency in emergency medicine at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. He has been a member of the MOA since 2013 and continues to show his pride for the profession throughout training. Dr. Broderick’s superiors and colleagues have recognized him on numerous occasions for his work ethic, demeanor, and positive attitude. Recently he received an ‘honorable mention’ during a hospital-wide Daily Safety Check In at Helen DeVos Hospital. 2019: ROBERT MOORE, DO Dr. Moore earned his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University in 2010, and obtained his medical degree from MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2016. Currently he is finishing up his residency in family medicine at Beaumont Hospital in Farmington Hills, MI. He is the Chief Resident for both the family medicine residency program and he is a Hospital Chief. Dr. Moore's superiors have noted that he is among the top 1% of residents that they have trained. 2018: ERIK WEITZ, DODr. Weitz earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Weitz is currently completing his residency in Family Medicine at Beaumont Hospital Troy and is a Clinical Assistant Professor for MSUCOM. Throughout his residency, Dr. Weitz has focused on making teaching and evidence-based medicine a core part of his medical training. He continues to volunteer in different teaching capacities and create programs to better engage the next generation of osteopathic doctors. 2017: KYLE MARTIN, DO, MPHDr. Martin earned both his undergraduate and masters degrees from Michigan State University. He then earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Martin is currently completing his residency is Emergency Medicine at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital and has served at the program’s chief resident since July 2016. Since the age of 12, Dr. Martin has traveled to Haiti providing aid to underserved populations. Throughout his medical career, Dr. Martin has continued traveling internationally providing medical care and research. 2016: JOE GORZ, DODr. Gorz earned his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, and obtained his medical degree from MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. He currently is a third-year Family Medicine Resident at McLaren Oakland. Over the last 7 years, Dr. Gorz was also in a leadership position coordinating medical students from Michigan State University on annual medical missions to Peru. During these trips, Dr. Gorz has helped facilitate the treatment of over 11,000 patients and provided over $1.2 million dollars in medications and medical supplies to Peruvians. 2015: EMILY BURK, DODr. Burk attended Michigan State University for her undergraduate degree and Midwestern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine for her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2012. She currently serves as Chief Resident at Detroit Medical Center in a program with 17 medicine residents and seven transitional year interns. 2014: ISLA ITTNER, DODr. Ittner earned her Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University and her Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Ittner is currently completing her Residency at St. John Providence Health System in Southfield, Mich. For the past year, she has served as the residency program’s Chief Resident and Resident Director of the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians. 2013: LYNN WILSON, DODr. Wilson earned her Bachelor of Science from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA and her Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Wilson is currently completing her residency at Providence Hospital and Medical Center in Southfield, Mich. For the past year, she has served as the residency program’s Chief Resident. Her other leadership roles have included the member of the MOA’s Intern-Resident Committee, Resident Director of the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians, and many more. 2012: LEAH CECIL, DODr. Cecil earned her Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University Lyman Briggs School and her Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Cecil is currently completing her Residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Mich. For the past year, she has served as the residency program’s Chief Resident. Her other leadership roles have included the Resident Director of the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians, President of the Michigan Osteopathic Student Society, President of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity and an Anatomy Laboratory Teaching Assistant. |
